Original Civil War small ink well. These are called "break aways" in reference to the way they were produced. They were filled with ink, then a small glass bubble was melded over the top to seal it. When ready for use, the top was simply broken off and replaced with a cork. Popular for a short time. Solid example except for the jagged opening of course. Aqua color. Measures 3-1/4 inches tall by 1-1/2 inches in diameter at the bottom. Condition is as pictured.
