    .  Historically important manuscript document containing field orders issued by Adjutant and Inspector General Samuel Cooper to General P.G.T. Beauregard: “Richmond, May 17th, 1864, Genl. G.T. Beauregard, As soon as it is ascertained with certainty that the Enemy has retreated within his entrenchments on the South side of James River Maj. Gen. R. Ransom will Return to his command in Richmond.  S. Cooper, A & I Genl.”
    HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT DOCUMENT CONTAINING FIELD ORDERS ISSUED BY ADJUTANT AND INSPECTOR GENERAL SAMUEL COOPER TO GENERAL P.G.T. BEAUREGARD
    One day after General Beauregard defeated General Benjamin F. Butler at the Battle of Proctor’s Creek, General Cooper orders Beauregard to send General Robert Ransom’s division back to Richmond.  Although Beauregard’s army was nearly half the size of Butler’s, Beauregard’s and Ransom’s actions successfully stopped Butler from beginning an assault on the Confederate capitol.
    ONE DAY AFTER GENERAL BEAUREGARD DEFEATED GENERAL BENJAMIN F. BUTLER AT THE BATTLE OF PROCTOR’S CREEK, GENERAL COOPER ORDERS BEAUREGARD TO SEND GENERAL ROBERT RANSOM’S DIVISION BACK TO RICHMOND
    The orders were telegraphed by General Cooper to General Beauregard and the present document was written and signed by Beauregard’s adjutant, Lieutenant Colonel G.W. Lay.  The document is one page with docketing on the verso, measures 5.75 by 5.5 inches, and in fine condition with soiling.
