    Description

This is a very nice Model 1864 Cap Box.
These small leather boxes were issued to hold percussion caps.
This one is marked "Newark NJ" on the inner flap, and "R. White US ORD DEPT SUB INSPECTOR" on the outer flap  The company in Newark that made these cap boxes was S. H. Young.
These boxes were attached to the belt with two loops, each held with two rivets and then sewed.  The latch tab is an integral extension of the top flap, and the brass finial is pear shaped with a point.  The inner flap has two side protectors sewn to the flap to protect the contents.
This box has the wool and pick inside.
Condition of the leather is excellent, with no cracking or crazing on the front or inside of the box.  There is some crazing on the back of the box and on the two belt loops.
See the photo of the Union soldiers with the cap boxes on their belts clearly visible.
