Description
This is an original Civil War model Cavalry Officer's hat insignia. Very good condition, outstanding patina. This is the very rare false-embroidered Officer's version. This false-embroidered Crossed-Sabers insignia comes to you in the riker-mount as pictured in the third photo.
Note - The Cavalry Officer false-embroidered version is the most difficult to find. I do not run across these often, and when they are found they are most often being sold at premium prices. This is a very difficult piece to find.
Civil War insignia are highly collectible, are very good investments that have continued to hold their value and appreciate, even when more expensive items in the Civil War collecting arena were experiencing fluctuations.
The M1851 Enlisted
Hat
Insignia
was used by both US and CS Enlisted Artillery,
Cavalry
, and Infantry troops, and was regulation from 1851 through the end of the Civil War. They were manufactured of stamped brass with wire back loops or prongs for attaching to the crown of the hat. The standard
insignia
for Artillery, Cavalry and Infantry enlisted men is approximately 3 1/2 inches wide and 2 inches high.
The Officer's versions of these insignia were also stamped brass, though they are more elaborate, with a "false embroidered" appearance that is much more elegant. Additionally, The false embroidered Officer's insignia was available in two sizes, the smaller versions designed to attach to the front of the Kepi.
I have been collecting and dealing primarily in American Civil War edged weapons, firearms and militaria for over 30 years. I frequently travel to specialized and general trade shows, conventions, auctions, and private sales and viewings all over the country, and maintain a network of the most reputable collectors and dealers in the community, and limit all my acquisitions to this network. My objective is to both collect for myself, and to bring to you only truly authentic, investment grade military collectables. The idea came to me as I frequently run across high quality items at wholesale prices, and rather than pass them up because they are not what I personally am looking for, I enjoy picking them up and making them available to this broader audience that would like to diversify investing into a field that is also enjoyable to collect, rich in history, and interesting to display.
