    Description

This cartridge box is an excellent and complete example of the Pattern 1861 cartridge box in the .58 caliber size.
The leather is flexible and in overall good condition, with no flaking.
The large oval brass US plate is in very good condition.
The closing tab is sewn to the underside of the flap and remains complete and unbroken.
There is writing on the underside of the flap which says "A Clapp II. 37"
The inner flap covers the two original tins that remain in place.
The box is marked with "C. S. Storms Maker, N.Y."  Christian Storms received contracts for 15,000 .58 caliber cartridge boxes in 1862.
Both side “ears” remain tightly attached. The implement pouch is present and complete with both the flap and the flap holder.   All stitching on the box remains tight and unbroken.  Both belt straps are sewn and riveted.  The large brass pointed finial is located on the bottom of box.  The two japanned iron roller buckles remain on bottom and are also sewn and riveted.
The box measures approximately 7” x 2” x 6” (for the .58 caliber elongated ball).
An absolutely beautiful example of this historic artifact!
