Here's a nice knife that may be older than the Civil War. Some say the iron collar dates it as pre-Civil War. The knife is clearly identified in hammered block letters. The ID is G.W. Hyatt. I have no idea about the soldier's identification as I have no tools to do the research. Soldiers often had their knives stamped so it wouldn't be lost or stolen among so many in camp. A knife was an extremely important weapon and tool. Everything on the knife is tight. Wood handle in good shape. The ID has baby powder highlighting the letters. The knife measures 10 3/4 inches long. Blade is a little over 3/4 inch wide and 6 1/4 long. A nice belt knife that some soldier clearly did not want to lose.
