    Description

A rare and desirable Civil War General Meade Historical Flow Blue Plate; Staffordshire Pottery, England, circa 1877.
This fine historical cobalt flow-blue plate features the image of General Meade and the house that served as his military headquarters. General Meade was a United States Army Officer most noted for defeating the Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
The reverse of the plate is marked in blue upper-case lettering above a crown “WHEELOCK” and below the crown “ENGLAND”. Under that “GEN’L MEADE & HEADQUARTERS, GETTYSBURG, 1863”.
We know that one George Wheelock opened a fine china store in South Bend, Indiana in 1877. In the next ten years the business expanded greatly. We also know that Wheelock ordered fine china from England with his own retailer name on it. I suspect that this patriotic plate was one of Wheelock's early commissions, rather than being an English product, although of course it could actually be both, because we know there was a Wheelock Pottery at near Sandbach in Cheshire in the nineteenth century.
The plate measures 10 1/8 inches in diameter and is in
    very good
condition. The is some staining to the reverse but there are no chips, no cracks, and no restoration. Selling without reserve to the highest bidder!
