    Description

    CIVIL WAR.
The Civil War era misdemeanor citation, issued against Edward Stevens is for fornication with Margaretta Dillen.  The Adams County District Attorney, “M.A. Duncan'' uses the young couple’s “female bastard child” as evidence of the crime.  On the verso the document shows evidence of a foreman capturing Stevens on April 17, 1865 and the young Union trooper paying his bond on August 23, 1865.

The document is in overall good condition with evidence of soiling around the edges and measures 7.25’’ by 6.0’’.  This is a very interesting document of the Civil War since it gives insight into the daily lives of the common foot soldier and the romantic relationships that developed throughout the conflict.  Also, the citation was issued in Adams County, Pennsylvania where the Battle of Gettysburg was fought leading to the possibility that Stevens met Dillen shortly before or after the great battle.
