Truly home-made fighting knife. No import blade or "store bought" here. Found at the XXXXXXX . Civil War show back in the 1970's when I think it was just a Gun Show. Let me give dimensions first. Overall 22 inches. Scabbard 15 1/2 inches. Scabbard is 3 inches at the widest. Both sides of the scabbard are slightly convex, with the rear, actually resulting in a median ridge. I tried to show this in the last picture. Blade is 19 inches and is full tang through the handle slabs. It is 2 inches at the widest, and 1/8 inch thick. The blade has a "Clip" or grind that is smooth near the tip, as well as a 1/4 inch hole. These all lead me to believe that the blade was made from a tool or an implement blade. It shows heavy pitting. The handles/slabs are made of yellow pine that are about 6 1/2 inches long, 1 3/4 inches wide, and, and 3/4 inches thick. They are held to the tang with two iron or steel rivets that are well flattened and rusted. There is a through hole drilled through the slabs and tang. The wooden scabbard appears to be made of two separate pieces of Cyprus or other open grain, soft wood that is not pine. One side being thin, the other side thicker. Both are slightly convex. I assume the inside is carved hollow to accommodate the blade, as indicated by the opening at the throat. The backside has a faux belt hook, which is solid except for a small through hole. The two pieces of wood are held together with seven small iron nails. Near the bottom of the scabbard (tip) on one side is inlet a small sliver of wood, perhaps a break? On the top, or forward face of the scabbard is a five pointed star. It stands proud of the wood, and shows the wood was carved below the star, which allows it to stand above the surface. I believe that the hole drilled through the belt hook in the wooden scabbard, and the through hole in the handle in the knife, are related. I believe this allowed for a string or leather thong to pass through the holes, keeping the blade and scabbard from being separated or lost. From the pictures, you can see the blade has pitted, and the pine handle more wear than the scabbard. Please see all the pictures and ask any questions before bidding. Slowly adding more of my collection back into the market. LOWERED start.
