, which would indicate early war issue.
Descended from the Shope/Shoup/Shupe family of Frederick County, Maryland.
Note
"JAS"
carved on cartridge box.
Good research potential for a Marylander serving in the Union Army.
Provenance: Obtained directly from the family by Daniel D. Hartzler (author of numerous books, and collector of various Maryland arms, etc.) of New Windsor, Maryland. Purchased from Hartzler many years ago by previous owner.
Condition: As clearly shown in provided photos. CARTRIDEGE BOX: Well worn and used. Crazed with some loss and flaking of finish. Lacks tin liners, sling buckles and finial. Tab partially torn but present. - "US" CARTRIDGE BOX PLATE: Very nice with beautiful deep age patina. - BAYONET: Very good overall. In untouched, uncleaned condition. - BAYONET SCABBARD: Solid with expected crazing and some flaking and finish loss. Some minor dents to brass scabbard tip.
